OS: Windows XP Home; Photoshop 6.0; Quark 6.0

Both programs tend to crash or hang, when I try to import an illustration in Quark. Lately it gets worse: Photoshop crashes when I try to open a folder containing illustrations made in Photoshop (Quark not running).
The problem seems to occur random. When I move the Quark document and the folder with illustrations - say to Desktop - the problem does not occur.

I tried to isolate the problem by removing possibly corrupted documents. But the problem still occurs random.

Programs can leave temporary files in a number of places in Windows XP, and this can destabilise the computer. Try this lot:

1. Delete all temporary files from C:\
2. Delete all temporary files from C:\Windows
3. Empty the contents of C:\temp and C:\Windows\Temp (if present)
3. Empty the contents of C:\Documents and Settings\"username"\Local Settings\Temp
4. Run Scandisk and delete any cross-linked files. Repeat until no errors are found
5. Run Disk Defragmenter
6. Reboot

If that doesn't cure the problem, you might have a duff memory module, or your PC might be infected with scumware.
