http://www.ultimateslr.com/memory-card-recovery.php
provides a long list of flash memory card recovery tools.
Does anyone in the forum have any experience with such tools? I have a flash memory with pictures that I really, really need to recover, but I am cautious about how to go about it.

I have used PhotoRescue version 2. Did what I needed. As I recall, it can make an image of the flash memory and process that image, rather than risking changes to the card itself.

Can I assume it read the card and made an image through a flash card reader, but not using the Windows driver?

I learn from web sources that this software is only $29, and has good reviews.

Yes, PhotoRescue does the job. It uses hardware reads for each cluster, and recovers the entire card without using the FAT. My problem was that the FAT was corrupted, so I had some confidence that it would work.

I have had good results using
foto recovery (http://www.oemailrecovery.com/photo_recovery.html). This application may recover corrupted images from CF, SD, MMC cards and etc.
