I don't think this has been posted previously. The winners of the TDC typography competition are posted at -- http://www.tdc.org/news/2006Results/index.html

Good grief - should I assume the typographical design of that page is deliberately so bad?Really hard to believe.

I mean, they could be trying for some arty effect, but it is hard to believe it would be so ugly in that case, with stuff jutting out and messing up the careful layout.

As far as the web page goes it is bad in an arty kind of way!

The one font I did like was the P22 Sweepy, very elegant and would look great both as a large heading or as body copy (perhaps not a whole page full). The others were not so inspiring though.

Had a look at some software for making fonts some time back and discovered that it's not for me, I'm far too impatient for that sort of thing!

I am a sucker for a classy-looking script, though I rarely have any practical use for them.

There’s another lovely script called Sloop (http://www.fontbureau.com/fonts/Sloop/styles) at Font Bureau, by calligrapher Richard Lipton.

Had a look at some software for making fonts some time back and discovered that it's not for me, I'm far too impatient for that sort of thing! It is a sort of compulsive preoccupation, but I love drawing letters, even on the computer. What I find uninteresting, unfortunately, is the technical stuff — which is a necessity if you are to make fonts for others to use.

But if you are good with Freehand or Illustrator, Fontographer — which is still available, from FontLab — is lovely to work with.

I also love drawing letters and am still tempted to upgrade my old FOG when I get some spare bucks. You see, I have two lovely, old sets of sample alphabets on steel rings labeled "'Do a Comp' - Phototype & lettering comping aid. An exclusive workbook series from lettergraphics - the Photo Process Lettering People" and it would be fun to digitize faces I've not seen anywhere else. Many already exist and/or are rather dated, and most are display faces, but there are some good candidates.

Don't misunderstand me; I like drawing letters too, sometimes I make custom ones for headings or logotypes etc. but a complete set, in different weights, italics and so on is a different matter!

BTW the same guy (Michael Clark) who designed Sweepy also did Pooper Black (http://www.myfonts.com/fonts/ihof/p22-pooper-black/) which is great as well. I could find a use for that if I didn't have to tell anyone what it's called...

It is a sort of diplomacy. ;)

Have yet to put it to use either, but am actively looking for my opportunity!
