Probably more than this, but I couldn't help smirking at the spam message below.

What a gem: misplaced or tortured punctuation, random styes of emphasis, clichés, wrong use of plurals and other words, and total mystification, all in one small package.

Probably more than this, but I couldn't help smirking at the spam message below.Better spam mangles a whole lot of words to escape the "spam word" filters; and I now frequently get spam that takes advantage of CSS (!) by chopping up words in three bits, and displaying them in columns, floating things left as they go down, so that eventually, visually, they'll make up recognizable words - but not, of course, in Eudora when set to not render email using IE: all you get is a column of word fragments then. Not much to filter on there. ;)

Reads as if different people took a stab at editing one line or another but got interrupted mid-stream, and they just left it.

Using "better" in an unusual sense - at least as far as the recipient is concerned!

Using "better" in an unusual sense - at least as far as the recipient is concerned!Sure - but sometimes I can't help grudgingly admiring the creativity of some professional spammers. ;)

I am getting one or two spam messages from my response forms containing garbage. I wonder whether this has a purpose. It seems to come through the virus checker OK.

Typical spam I get these days (apologies if this turns out to be porn)Not a chance. Something about a (commercial/business?) course running 20-26 March, and what's in the program. I can make out only a few words, but enough for the above; something about technology and instruments as well. And a phone number for further information (which you snipped off after the area code - Moscow, if it's in Russia).

I also get a lot of entirely blank spam messages (as in one every two days or so). They also seem to make it through the virus scanner OK as well, so unless some ISP is stripping it out along the way, I can only assume that spammy has a misconfigured email blaster.

Not porn. Something about a practical course on some commercial topic. (Way beyond my college Russian, which ran more to Tolstoy than business, and was 40 years ago anyway.)
I get some of those, along with ones in Asian languages about which I have no clue.
Maybe not so much spam as misdirected mass mailings?

I am sure you are correct about the misdirection. I get loads of English messages from (mostly) Chinese companies trying to sell me steel girders, embroidered clothes, and similarly uninteresting stuff, as well as Indian offshore programmers going cheap (like chicks!)
The market research/targeting these guys do is minimal if it even exists!

The market research/targeting these guys do is minimal if it even exists!Yeah. In fact, I wonder if they are being victimized by “operators” who take money and guarantee huge distribution.

A few years ago, much of my SPAM was in Chinese characters, or maybe Japanese, but no more. That was back in the Classic Compuserve email days, now long gone.
