Mentioned on one of the lists I read as excellent backup software:
SuperDuper! (http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html)
It appears to be free...

Looks pretty good. If I didn't have Retrospect already set up to back my system up automatically, I'd look seriously at it.

It appears to be free...Love the name (no false modesty there!) <g>. It does look good.
It is free, for the basics, but if you want scheduling and some other automation functions, you need to pay. But it costs only $28 — about $100 less than the personal version of Retrospect.

I used it in earnest yesterday, and it's great!
How about this for bad luck? Just before Christmas, Disk Utility showed loads of errors on the hard disk on our main Mac: so many that I had to bung in a spare (I always keep a couple of new disks for just this eventuality) and reinstall Tigger and all our software over Christmas. Finished yesterday morning, ran Disk Utility and saw an error. On the new disk, no less! Then I saw Terrie's post, and SuperDuper saved the day by cloning the new disk onto my second spare.
SuperDuper is the Mac user's equivalent of Ghost. Until Apple and MS allow you to drop one disk onto another, these programs are essential.

And you remind me to get a nice fat backup drive and a copy of SuperDuper — no sense waiting for the calamity to strike!

I've been using the paid version for a few months. No problems at all.

robin: I used it in earnest yesterday, and it's great!Oh yay!!! The person who recommended it on Yahoo's Digital Fine Arts list raved about it and a number of other mac users chimed in to agree...
