I have some text in Photoshop CS (on a Mac) that has a styles layer attached to it. The styles layer applies a colour overlay, a drop shadow and a pillow emboss. The text layer is on top of an image layer. Looks fine, but...

Whenever I print it the pillow emboss disappears. Whenever I flatten the layers the pillow emboss disappears. If I do a 'save to web' the embossing shows in the jpeg preview but isn't there when I open the resulting jpeg file.

The other effects (colour and shadow) are fine, it's just the emboss that goes.

Thinking it might be the font (Kelmscott), I've tried using different fonts but the problem remains.

What am I doing wrong?

I seem to have found a sort of answer. It seems to be something to do with the interrelationship between the pillow emboss parameters and the image resolution. When I changed the resolution of the image from 300 dpi to 200dpi it worked fine. If I changed the depth of the emboss it worked fine. Seems as if the initial values I chose just didn't work at 300dpi. Can't imagine why but at least the job is printing OK now.

Whew. But what is that all about, I wonder?

Mathematics, I fear, or some other arcane reason.
