Xara just announced they are moving their illustration program to open source. They are also in the process of developing a Linux version, and they are looking toward a Mac version. And from what I read, this is to help provide a counter balance to the pending Adobe/Macromedia graphics giant and the threat of a Microsoft graphics giant.
And for those of you who don't already know, Xara burst onto the scene some years ago as the fast and easier upstart drawing software that had some features the big boys lacked. But it never developed the brute power or popularity of Draw, Freehand, or Illustrator. Since then it appears to have gained some bitmap tools, making it another of the hybrid types of software. But I have not tested it since this happened, so I cannot vouch for its ability.
