There was some discussion about this a while ago, but had anyone actually used it?

Yes, I've used TransType Pro 3 for Windows. I had difficulty with some rather old Type 1 font families that had too many members: it was rather selective about what fonts it recognized, but had no difficulty in dealing with larger families of OTF fonts, which converted to TT fonts. I put it down to naming difficulties.
