Does anyone use Irisread for OCR? I used to use Irisread v. 4 with an Agfa Snapscan 50, but for some time I've not had the scanner connected, but lately I've realized that my software is well behind the times—I.R.I.S. is now offering Irisread v. 10 at a reduced price. The trouble is that the offer ends today: can anyone help me to make up my mind?

Thank you. Inversion is always likely to happen with me.
I.R.I.S. programs aren't apparently well known in the US, but ReadIris was supplied with all Agfa scanners, which are now made by someone else.

When I bought my HP home scanner 4 years ago it scanned images as a word file and is great - and was free with a £100 scanner

Yes, ReadIris does that too. My scanner is also about four years old. ReadIris 10 claims state-of-the art OCR, though v. 4 was already satisfactory for typewritten documents, and was also included in the price of the scanner (ca £175).
