As an example of what can be done with automation, I just posted the first beta release of my InDesign CS Cross Platform Text Styles Reporter product at my web site:
http://tinyurl.com/6x2nm
[The real URL is horrendously long because of the php code.]
At the moment, it only does paragraph styles, but there seems to be enough demand for reports of those that I decided to get it out there for some feedback while I work on adding character styles.

(Isn’t TinyURL wonderful? I just started using it, having discovered that my earlier belief that they were temporary was wrong. They persist so long as the link is live.)

Hey Dave...a friend of mine who does the dtp work for a local equine magazine has tentatively (has to pass it by her boss first) offered me a freelance job laying out ads for the magazine. They are mac based and I'm pc based (although if this works out they may lend me a mac sometime in the future)...
Soooo...I've got a question based on this comment from her (EQ is the mag name):
>>I have all the EQ ad sizes set up in InDesign as doc presets, an InDesign print preset
Do you think I will have a problem with opening the ID doc presets on my pc--using ID3.01 as I believe she is?
Thanks!
Terrie

It works as well as any cross-platform application, but:
Watch out for fonts -- OpenType fonts, aside from all their other attributes, are completely cross-platform, so I strongly recommend trying to move to them; that might be beyond your control, though.
Watch out for links -- There can be some really annoying relinking issues when files are passed back and forth between Mac and Windows -- it's even possible to have illegal filepaths on one that are legal on the other. The Mac even allows you to create folders with "/" in their names; this can create its own special chaos.
But generally, cross platform works very well with IDCS.

>>Watch out for fonts
Yeah...I did have a thought about fonts...I've asked her to get me a list of their commonly used fonts...from what she's told me about these ads, they will not be all that sophisticated ("it ain't art"...'-}}) and will more than likely be using things like Times Roman and other commonly available fonts...
>>Watch out for links
Will do...
>>The Mac even allows you to create folders with "/" in their names; this can create its own special chaos.
Ewww...icky...icky...ick!
>>But generally, cross platform works very well with IDCS.
Cool...
I'll let you know how it goes...
I'll be providing the ads in pdf's which I think will mitigate a lot of problems...
Thanks!

It's a bit early in the morning (9.38 am) but I can't see how to download the script. Is there a link on the page? I'll have another look after my second cup of coffee but at the moment I just can't see any download link.
